Exploring: Cincinnati, Ohio

What to do in Cincinnati, Ohio…

Last year (2017), we decided to hit the road and check out some not-so-common cities in order to check off a couple more states from the list. First city on our Labor Day Weekend trip: We went out exploring Cincinnati, Ohio!

We arrived midday and immediately made way to the historic Findlay Market. This place was phenomenal! This place is a food market which has been in operation since 1852. They have everything you can possibly imagine… and then some more! Have you ever had dried pig ears? Well, I did! Let’s just say I might not be doing that again, though.

What to eat in the city!

It was here that we embarked on a food walking tour throughout the whole city. What a cool experience it was. We sampled some Goetta at Grayson’s in Findlay Market. This is a meat/sausage mix of German origins and is quite popular in the area. It was a bit too spicy for my taste, but good nonetheless.

Next, we made our way to Skyline Chili, another staple of Cincinnatian cuisine. The chili was great. They actually use cinnamon in their dish, and you can tell. Served with cheese and oyster crackers, this was another experience we would not forget! We also sampled Graeter’s Ice Cream famous Raspberry Chocolate Chip which was delicious, a combination I would not have thought of trying myself.

We stopped along several other neat locales, like the Cincinnati Music Hall, Paul Brown Stadium (where the Bengals play), Washington Park and Carew Tower. In fact, we even went up the tower and say the best, most picturesque views of the city. Travelling throughout the city was a breeze while on the Bell Connector. Did you know that the automated voice in each trolley car was recorded by Nick Lachey, who is a Cincinnati native? Yea, I didn’t know either. But now I guess this little tidbit of information will never leave my mind. I can’t remember where I put my keys, but at least I know who voiced the Cincinnati trolley.

The tour culminated at the Smale Riverfront Park, where we got to enjoy more nice vistas of the Queen City. It was a rainy day, unfortunately, so we made our way back to the hotel for a nightcap. This would be the night that would change the rest of our lives…

Why the city is so special for us…

You see, all day, I could tell that Sophie was nervous and fidgety. Going through security made her apprehensive. She was uncomfortable and hardly spoke. She was enjoying herself, but she definitely seemed preoccupied.

When we finally checked into the hotel, she excused herself to go get some coffee. And if you know me, you know that I love my little afternoon pick-me-up! So of course, I didn’t say no. She comes back with a delicious mocha, as well as three cake pops… One for the each of us. And that was exactly how she said it…

Honestly, it took a bit for me to actually grasp what she was trying to tell me. In fact, you may not have picked it up yet, either. This was the moment Sophie used to tell me that she was pregnant! I will never forget that moment. The mix of joy, confusion, uncertainty, and excitement is a feeling I will never forget, either. The only other time in my life where I felt the same way was the drive home after I had first met Sophie.

This is precisely why Cincinnati will hold a special place in our hearts. And, perhaps one day we will take baby Grace to visit as well.

Let’s get back to Cincinnati’s delicious foods…

Later that evening, we went to a Brazilian steakhouse across the street from our hotel in order to celebrate the wonderful news with friends who had accompanied us on this adventure. It truly was a night we will never forget.

The next morning, we had breakfast at a local eatery: Maplewood Kitchen Bar. Sophie had these delicious lemon ricotta pancakes. I don’t quit remember what I had, a sandwich of some sort, but I do remember that I thoroughly enjoyed a corn flake, chocolate chip and marshmallow cookie… what better way to start the morning?! Before we headed to our next city (Louisville, KY), we spent the rest of the morning perusing some stores. We found some baby books at a gift shop and bought our baby her first presents that day!

We had such an amazing time visiting the Queen City!  We will definitely come back to keep exploring Cincinnati, Ohio!
