Exploring: Disney’s Food and Wine Festival

Disney’s Food and Wine Festival always caught my attention, but I never had the opportunity to go. Being food lovers, it did not take much to get us to plan this trip.  So this past fall, Mikey and I decided to try it out.  It was definitely a fun and delicious experience which we hope to go to more in the future.  Below, I share our food adventures from Disney’s Food and Wine Festival 2015.

First off, we went to the Chew Lab (near Imagination) where we ordered a delicious Olive Oil Poached Salmon with fresh corn, bacon and pepper jam.  The salmon was so soft and perfectly pink; it was definitely a great start to our food adventure!

So we started our trek of the countries off in Scotland.  There I ordered a Potato Pancake with Scottish Smoked Salmon and herb sour cream and Mikey tried the Seared Sea Scallop with spinach-cheddar gratin and crispy bacon.  Both were tasty, though a little strange.  The potato pancake was warm and so was the sour cream, but the salmon was too cold.  The scallop I didn’t try (not a huge fan of seafood), but Mikey said it was alright.  The dishes were not bad, but not our favorites.  The best were soon to come!

The next cart was Desserts and Champagne.  We ordered a delicious Frozen S’mores drink and Guylian Belgian chocolate seashell truffles.  I was hesitant at first ordering the s’mores drink (I’m not sure why…I love s’mores!), but Mikey convinced me and I was so glad he did.  It was so perfect with shaved chocolate, graham cracker crumbs and marshmallows on top.  Definitely refreshing for the hot day we were experiencing.

Next, we headed over to the Dominican Republic.  It had been a few years since this country was represented so we new we wanted to try it…plus everyone kept telling us how amazing it was!  We really wanted a pina colada, but unfortunately they machine to crush the ice and make the slushy was broken.  Instead, we got the souffle de yuca.  It was a Yuca Souffle topped with griddled cheese.  This was heavenly.  Definitely a favorite of mine for the day.  The mix of the yucca with the cheese was perfect, and the cheese almost tasted fried which was even more delicious! This topped the charts for me!

We then went over to Greece and had a gyro.  We just ordered a plain Chicken Gyro with Tzatziki sauce.  I remember first trying gyros about two years ago while going to college with my sister.  We were starving one day and found a gyro place and decided to give it a try.  It was amazing! And this gyro was nothing less than that.  The bread was great and the amount of filling and cream sauce was perfect.  It was also a refreshing treat.

We then walked over to Ireland where Mikey got a Lobster and Seafood Fisherman’s Pie.  Again, not being a seafood eater, I did not eat it, but the smell was heavenly.  Mikey loved this little pie, though.  He said the lobster specifically was amazing and the sauce over it was delicious.

We then headed to France where everything was absolutely packed.  We could not really get into the little cart so we ended up just having a Crepe at another cart.  We got a plain sucre crepe with chocolate ice cream.  It was a perfectly sweet way to cleanse our pallate to continue onto more savory foods.

Continuing on, we went to Brazil where we had another outstanding meal. We had their “Escondidniho de Carne” (Little Hidden One) which is layered meat pie with mashed yucca.  Oh my goodness, this was so so good.  I almost went back for another one.  we also tried their “Pao de Queijo” which is brazilian cheese bread.  Also, amazing.  This was definitely one of our favorite meals.

At this point, we took a little break.  We discovered over in the US they had a lounge for Chase cardholders.  We have the Chase Disney card so we were able to go in and they provided us with complimentary refreshments and a place to sit and relax and charge your phone.  They also had a drawing class similar to the Art of Animation one that was recently closed in Hollywood Studios.  That was Mikey’s favorite thing to do at that park so he was pretty dissapointed when it closed.  Needless to say, he was ecstatic over being able to take it here.  Some funny drawings and refreshments later, we headed back out to the park to continue….eating.

In America, Mikey had a New England Lobster Roll (something he had been dying to try!) and I had Baked Carrot Cake with Craisins and Cream Cheese icing.  I can’t tell you how that lobster roll was because I was so busy eating up my carrot cake.  Mmm, it was so delicious.  They drenched the freshly baked cake with warm cream cheese icing…one of my favorites!  The lobster roll was good too…I think.  Like I said, carrot cake was my focus!

We then went to Mexico where we tried the “Chilaquiles de Pollo” which were corn chips layered with seasoned chicken, queso fresco, sour cream and cilantro.  This is also where, after much debate, we ordered our first alcoholic drink, a guava margarita.  That was our only drink of the day, and we could have done without it.  Definitely not so good.  We each took a sip, threw it away and enjoyed our little chicken and chips meal.  The chicken was a bit spicy, but between the queso fresco and sour cream, that was a bit masked.  We enjoyed that one!

Lastly, we went to the Cheese Studio and ordered a Cheese Fondue which came with a small baguette of sour dough bread.  This was so tasty.  The cheese was perfectly warm and seasoned and I wished I had more bread to finish it off!

All in all, we definitely had a successful first trip to the Food and Wine Festival.  We skipped a lot of countries that we really wanted to try, but we were just too full!  Hopefully next year we’ll get to those also.

Here were our top 3 favorite meals.

Sophie:

  1. Dominican Republic’s Souffle de Yucca
  2. Brazil’s layered meat and mashed yucca pie
  3. Frozen S’more drink

Mikey:

  1. Lobster Roll
  2. Carrot Cake
  3. Lobster and Seafood Fisherman’s Pie
